Dickie Parfitt is probably best known as a former Folkestone and Dover footballer in the post-war years or as a businessman running Gateway Factors, but like so many of his generation Dickie experienced another very different life.

During the early years of the Second World War Dickie was an Elvington lad working in the local coal mine, but at the age of 19 he decided to volunteer for the forces. Being in a reserved occupation, the only post he could be released for was that of a pilot in the RAF; although, as it turned out, he was trained as a bomb-aimer and took part in Bomber Command's controversial raids over Germany during the later years of the war.

Now, aged 80, he is anxious to tell the story of his own war, both the humour and the anguish, including his trips home on leave to see his wife in a war-torn Dover. More important to Dickie than his own story is to further his personal 'crusade' for better recognition for Bomber Command and its Chief from 1942, Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Harris, who was heavily criticised for the conduct of his 'war' especially after D-Day. His aircrew were never given any special recognition for their efforts after D-Day despite the dangers of flying over occupied German territory for many hours at a time. This book is Dickie's attempt to help 'put the record straight'.
